Kahu

In Hawaiian culture, we don’t refer to ourselves as a pet’s ‘owner.’

Instead, we are referred to as their ‘Kahu.’

The term ‘Kahu’ carries deep significance—it represents a sacred role as a guardian, protector, steward, or honored attendant. A Kahu is entrusted with safeguarding something precious, something cherished. What they protect is not mere property; it’s a part of their soul. True love for an animal makes us better, and embodying the essence of a Kahu connects us to all life.

Communicating with animals makes it very clear that they are not our belonging or commodity but our teachers, guides, family, and healers.

In what ways has your pet been your teacher, guide, family and/or healer?

Together, let's amplify the voice of our beloved animals & nature and strengthen our connection with them.

Warmly,

Tanja
