The Adventurous Frog’s Rescue

During our vacation in the Alabama Hills area of California, we had an unexpected visitor in our vacation rental - a frog! He hopped into the bathroom to let us know he was there. It was surprising to find a frog in the house, as it was surrounded by dry desert and cactuses. I asked him how he ended up in the house, and he shared that he had gone on an adventure, hitching a ride on the backpack of the previous renters.

I checked in with him to see if he was okay or if he needed anything. He assured me that he was physically okay. He told me that he had been eating some of the little flying insects that also took up residence in the bathroom but requested a little water area. So I filled a baking dish with water and placed it in the bathroom for the frog to use overnight. I asked him if he would be okay to wait until morning to be rescued and taken back to nature. He agreed and said that he would like to be brought to an area by the stream, that was driving distance away.

I promised to help him return to his chosen place in the morning and asked him to wait in a specific spot in the bathroom. The next morning, I checked, and he was patiently waiting for me in the exact spot. I thanked him for for his cooperation and explained to him that I would offer him a container to climb into and that he need not be afraid. To my amazement, he remained very calm and, with very little nudging, climbed right into the container. Initially relaxed, he grew a bit impatient, but I reassured him that we were on our way and he would be free soon.

When we arrived at the stream, he slowly exited the container and sat there for a while, thanking us for not being afraid of him and for rescuing him. Eventually, we said our goodbyes, and I encouraged him to move down the hill to safety.

After a little nudge, he took a few big leaps down towards the water. We watched him for a while before leaving.

I continued to check with him throughout the day and for a few more weeks after. He assured me that he made it to the water and was happy to have returned from his adventure.

It was an honor and a joy to aid this sentient being.
